The Optical Counterpart of the Isolated Neutron Star Rx J1605.3+3249

چکیده
We have detected the optical counterpart to the nearby isolated neutron star RX J1605.3+3249 using observations from the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrometer aboard the Hubble Space Telescope. The counterpart, with m50CCD = 26.84± 0.07 mag and very blue colors, lies close to the ROSAT HRI error circle and within the Chandra error circle. The spectrum is consistent with a Rayleigh-Jeans tail whose emission is a factor of ≈ 14 above the extrapolation of the X-ray blackbody, and the source has an unabsorbed X-ray-to-optical flux ratio of log(fX/fopt) = 4.4, similar to that of other isolated neutron stars. This confirms the classification of RX J1605.3+3249 as a neutron star. Subject headings: pulsars: individual (RX J1605.3+3249)—stars: neutron—X-rays: stars

Spectral Features in the Thermal Emission from Isolated Neutron Stars: Dependence on Magnetic Field Strengths
We study several effects that influence the strength of the proton cyclotron and atomic features in the thermal spectra of magnetic neutron stars. We show that it is possible for vacuum polarization to strongly suppress the spectral lines when the magnetic field B & 10 G. For weaker fields (B . 7× 10 G), the surface spectrum is unaffected by vacuum polarization; thus the proton cyclotron absorp...
متن کاملA Probable Optical Counterpart for the Isolated Neutron Star Rx J1308.6+2127
Using a very deep observation with HST/STIS, we have searched for an optical counterpart to the nearby radio-quiet isolated neutron star RX J1308.6+2127 (RBS 1223). We have identified a single object in the 90% Chandra error circle that we believe to be the optical counterpart. This object has m50CCD = 28.56 ± 0.13 mag, which translates approximately to an unabsorbed flux of Fλ = (1.7 ± 0.3)× 1...
متن کاملX-ray Spectroscopy of Thermally Emitting Neutron Stars
I describe recent high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy of surface emission from nearby, thermally emitting neutron stars. I focus on RX J0720.4−3125, RX J1308.6+2127, and RX J1605.3+3249, all of which have similar temperature, but differ in the presence and strength of absorption features in their spectra. I discuss possible causes for the absorption we see in two sources, and conclude that it ma...
متن کاملLetter to the Editor RX J0420.0–5022: an isolated neutron star candidate with evidence for 22.7 s X-ray pulsations
We report the discovery of a new isolated neutron star candidate, RX J0420.0–5022, showing evidence (4σ) for 22.7 s X-ray pulsations in ROSAT data. NTT observations of the field around the soft X-ray source do not reveal any likely optical counterpart brighter than B = 25.25 implying an X-ray to optical flux ratio of > 103.3 and ruling out other possible kinds of X-ray emitters. The X-ray spect...
